Can Wood Burning Stoves Really Be Good For The Planet?

Responsibly farmed wood is a carbon neutral heat source since wood is not a fossil fuel and trees absorb all the carbon dioxide during growth that they release when they are burned. They have been identified by the government as helpful in the fight against climate change.

But when wood burns inefficiently it releases unburned carbon in the form of smoke and soot (particulate matter or PM) which is not fair to local lungs. To be good neighbours we must do the following:

Don't Burn Wet Wood

Internal moisture prevents wood from completely burning and so produces PM

Use an EcoDesign Stove

Which reduces PM by up to 80% when compared to a traditional stove

A Professional Chimney Sweep

At least once per year to remove large particles before they climb the flue and escape
